Dayak Ngaju, Pilang

Pilang Village, Borneo

Pilang village stands as the first Indigenous community in Central Kalimantan to have received official acknowledgment from the Indonesian government for its Indigenous customary forest and has inspired other indigenous communities to pursue the same endeavour. The recognition seeks to grant them the autonomy to manage their land, alleviating concerns of potential appropriation by monoculture industries. The elders have been conscientiously planting a range of endemic and vulnerable tree species within their forest.
